Arctic Warfare - back home and reporting

The refresher training came, was and went. Quite a nice winter adventure it was. We made friends with a new model of the mobile mast; a bit taller and more space-eating than the old one. Practicing the use of the basic comms software was also welcome, I'd forgotten a bit more stuff than I thought. There were times when the harsh cold was biting hard or the training felt a bit too much like the recruit times in the army, but while listening to the orders of the departure march, I thought to myself: "Damn, it's great to be a Finnish soldier."
It wasn't all just sitting and waiting, either. On the last evening, a three-man "commando squad" attempted to eliminate our unit, but the outcome was the squad's "eradication". As far as I could tell from the blank-ammo firefight in the pitch-black darkness, I "eliminated" the commando who tried to "destroy" the link station. We also made jokes about how one of them committed an indirect "suicide" by running into our long-thread antenna. :lol:

I guess I'm ready to bury my prejudices about Suunto; the Core I bought in the beginning of this month passed its baptism of fire with flying colours. It endured rough use (mostly the extreme chill and the bumps) and its meters gave consistent readings. My only (small) remaining concern is the battery life. So far, so good. :) I don't know how long the factory battery will last, but the truth will be told by the second battery this watch gets.

Now I'm enjoying a well-deserved Christmas vacation. I'm staying overnight at my old home; two nights, if the weather worsens. It's nice to have a white Christmas in a cold winter.

December's coming, catch!

Only two days of professional internship remaining. These two and a half months really flew by. I'm gonna miss all those great people. And the delicious food (for which I never had to pay, hah. :lol: ) My teacher evaluated my "proof of skill" work with one of my co-workers and I received an excellent grade. I guess the grade will be the same for the entire internship curriculum. I'm happy. :) One of my works from this curriculum is already viewable here, I will upload more when I have enough time.

Channel 4 is broadcasting a TV spot about HDTV every now and then. I fail to perceive the point of advertising HDTV in a normal TV. Or does the old-fashioned TV switch into an HD one for the duration of the spot, to convince the viewers of the COUGHso-calledCOUGH superior image quality? Oh well, not the one who sells, but the one who buys... :roll:

The (only) good thing about taxes is the tax refund. A nice extra to get some Christmas presents for my loved ones.

I read something rather ignorant in a newspaper article this morning. The article was about alcoholism, and the writer had written that alcoholism is a disease.

ALCOHOLISM IS NOT A DISEASE.
Sure it's rather everyday for people to mistake alcoholism for a sickness, but the point is: a newspaper editor should have his/her facts right before writing about them.
Alcoholism is a mental disorder, caused by conscious choice. It can't be inherited, it can't be caught like a flu. When it comes to alcohol-related sickness, the illnesses and bodily dysfunctions are only the by-products of alcoholism.
